It’s Decided

My youngest son, age 14, was promoted to 1st Degree Black Belt (decided) in Tae Kwon Do tonight. It took 39 months of hard work but he earned it. All three of us – me, loving wife, and him – are happy he won’t have to test again for at least one year when he is eligible to test for 2nd Degree. Him because it is stressful and us because testing gets expensive.

  1. Congrats to the boy! My instructor was always telling us about black belts getting in trouble in court for hurting people while defending themselves. He talked about it so much that he finally convinced me. So I stopped testing, but kept taking and studying. I don’t know that I’ve ever heard of a case of anyone getting treated extra harshly for being a black belt, though. I wonder if he was just wrong or if that was something that only happened in the past or something?

  2. I an imagine some attorney arguing that the “black belt” in any fight had an unfair advantage, but I think that would only apply if the black belt started the fight. Sine nearly all martial arts, including TKD, teach their students to walk away from any confrontation if possible and certainly not to start one, I don’t see this happening that much. Sounds like something out of the movies or TV more than anything. We’re very proud of him but this is just the beginning of his studies. All the colored belts below this are just preparation for learning the real skills he will study in the upper-levels of black belt.
