WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama, whose gay and lesbian supporters have grown frustrated with his slow movement on their priorities, is extending benefits to same-sex partners of federal employees, a White House official said.
Aside from the fact that this will only increase federal spending during a time where we don’t need to increase federal spending, I don’t really have much to say about this except the obvious. Doesn’t this mean he has to extend the same benefits to unmarried straight federal employees who are partnered with someone? If I was living with loving wife in sin (what fun that would be) wouldn’t I have the same right to extend my federal benefits to her that a gay/lesbian employee would have to extend his or her benefits to his or her unmarried partner?
Sure seems like it to me.
And don’t give me that “Well, straight employees have the choice to marry while gay/lesbian employees do not” stuff, either. Not every gay/lesbian couple wants to marry any more than every straight couple wants to marry. If that were the case every gay/lesbian couple in California would have already been married before Prop 8 was passed and subsequently found constitutional. But they didn’t for a variety of reasons one of which I am sure was the “Hey, baby I love you, but I’m just not into long-term commitment” reason.
So this seems to me to be doomed to controversy and lawsuits aplenty which will certainly make the trial lawyers happy.
Trial lawyers, by the way, like gays/lesbians, are big supporters of Democrats so he gets a two-for-one with this move.
You can say a lot of things about our socialist president, but he ain’t dumb.
A rather blockbuster NYT story in tomorrow’s paper about Obama’s ploy to win back the gays by offering some federal employees some benefits (but not all, including no health coverage).
The White House actually admitted to the NYT that they were offering the benefits to help contain the “growing furor among gay rights groups.” How about doing it because it’s the right thing to do? How about doing it because you were already planning to do it to help our community, because you recognize us as human beings? We kept being told, fret not, we have a secret plan for your civil rights – now it seems, not so much:
Well, isn’t this something. Not only was he doing this not out of principle but for pure political self-interest, but he was also leaving out health benefits, which frankly may be the only thing worth having in the federal benefit system now. That and Social Security which also would not be included.
I just don’t know . . . is he more stupid than evil socialist or more evil socialist than stupid? Flip a coin I guess.
