The Gift That Keeps On Giving

Turns out David Spade is a pretty cool guy. Assuming your idea of a cool guy is donating massive amounts of firepower to law enforcement officers, which I do.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – The Phoenix Police Department has gotten some high-powered goodies courtesy of actor David Spade.

The one-time Phoenix resident donated $100,000 so that the department can buy approximately 50 AR-15 rifles.

Spade said he wanted to make the donation after seeing a TV news report about Phoenix officers having to buy their own rifles. Spade grew up in the Phoenix area and graduated from Arizona State University.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Alan Hill says the rifles will be given to patrol officers and that the agency was grateful for the gifts.

“These guys need to be able to do their jobs and I am just happy I could help,” Spade said in a statement released by his publicist.

I’m know some people don’t think this type of weapon should be in the hands of street cops, but you’re just wrong. First of all, despite my cute kitten above (who is actually firing an AK-47), the AR-15 is not a machine gun. It’s just a rifle, albeit a cool-looking one, and it fires one shot at a time. So it’s no worse than any rifle except that it looks scary to some week-kneed folks. But more importantly, it’s just a fact of life that in our topsy-turvy world today sometimes officers need more than a handgun to deal with the bad, and sometimes just fricken evil, guys and these serve that purpose fairly well.

At least until you can bring in the rapid fire big guns.

H/T to Three Donia.

  1. I’m swiping that picture.

  2. I heard Spade grew up in that area and he has given the police money before, for various things. Never would have spotted him as a law enforcement supporter but maybe he wants to keep his old neighborhood safe. It’s a great thing for him to do, whatever the reason.

  3. IMHO, police officers ought to have weapons that are *at least* as powerful as anything the bad guys have. Cheers for Spade’s gift.
