I Hate To Be Impolite, But Isn’t This Sorta Like . . . Oh, Hell, Nevermind

Obama going to require middle and high schoolers to perform community service. College kids, too.

You can never escape The One.

The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation’s challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps. Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start.

What, exactly, do these kids get in return for their mandatory service? Are they paid? Do they get free happy meals at least? Or are they, by the simple fact that they are in a public school, indentured servants? And what about kids in private schools? Will Barry’s long fingers reach them as well? And what about private service groups? The Boy and Girl Scouts for example. Church groups? Do they count? Because frankly those private oganizations do more good for our country than all the government-sponsored service groups ever imagined by liberal minds.

And doesn’t this mandatory service fly in the face of this cute little quote from the same page?

“When you choose to serve — whether it’s your nation, your community or simply your neighborhood — you are connected to that fundamental American ideal that we want life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness not just for ourselves, but for all Americans. That’s why it’s called the American dream.”

I don’t know who said that – I assume it was Barry at some point in his two year presidential campaign – but doesn’t the phrase “choose to serve” imply voluntary service, not required service?

It sure sounds like it to me.

Look, I want my kids to be in school learning, not out performing whatever feel-good fantasy Barry defines as community service. Fifty hours for middle schoolers? When do they do their homework? Play? Who supervises them? Their parents? Or some Barry-appointed warden?

And a hundred hours for college students? My middle son is already in a service fraternity at college doing his part. He needs to be studying so he can graduate and contribute to society, not playing at being an activist.

Now I don’t want to appear all angry here folks, since I swear I am a reformed angry political blogger, but doesn’t this worry you a bit. Seriously, don’t you just have visions of little Obama blue-shirts singing songs of allegiance to Barry and at some point informing on their parents for not recycling or complaining about higher-taxes at the dinner table.

Eh, maybe not. I do tend to be a tad paranoid.

But still.

Glenn Reynolds reports that the wording has changed from requiring community service for kids to setting some silly goal for community service for kids. You can’t fool Google cache. I don’t know if any of you knew this, but Barry’s campaign website used to change all the time. Hell, many times controversial posts would just disappear with no reason given.

I guess they plan on continuing the same high ethics now that they are elected. Comforting, no?
