Inspiration - The New “In” Word

Posted by TRO on February 11, 2008

Prologue:  I just re-read this post for the first time since writing it and it suddenly dawned on me that some people might think the title is a play on the “N” word.  It’s not.  Or at least it wasn’t meant to be when I titled it.  When I titled it, I was thinking of that Simpsons episode where Grandpa Simpson says, “I used to be with it, but then they changed what “it” was. Now what I’m with isn’t it, and what’s it seems weird and scary to me. It’ll happen to you!”  (Yes, I know they are two different words; just know that was what I was thinking.)

So it certainly wasn’t a conscious thing.

Regardless, now that I think on it, it kind of makes sense because the ”N” word is an insult to blacks (to put it mildly) and Obama may be the first black man to transcend that whole label thing and win the presidency.   So in that light maybe he is redefining the “N” word into the “In” word.

Or is that too deep? Not deep enough?  Eh.

On to the post.

*****************************************

I swear if I hear one more person tell me how inspiring Barak Obama is I am going to puke.

What the hell does that mean anyway?  I’ll tell you what it means.  It means the guy gives good speech.  He gets them out of their seats - or their pews really - since his speeches are peppered with more religion than the average Southern Baptist bible meeting.  (Bush mentions Jesus and the left screams theocracy.  Obama poses as the new Messiah and the left goes orgasmic.)

Forget the fact that many of the people being inspired by him have no fricken clue what his policies are.

That just doesn’t matter.  No, what matters is a) he ain’t Bush, and b) he makes them feel good.

A feeling I assume is similar to the one I have when I watch Mimi Rogers in Full Body Massage.

You know that great tingley feeling?

Yeah, like that.  Yummy.

So maybe I can understand why they like it, but wouldn’t a six pack and a good porn movie work just as well?

And why do they need to be inspired anyway?  Are they so fricken unfocused and apathetic that they need someone to inspire them to action?

Can’t they “self-inspire” themselves.

It’s feels good and doesn’t make you go blind - that’s an old wives tale.

Doesn’t being an American mean you are self-sufficient.  That you make your own way.

I always thought so.

So I don’t get it.

Other than my father - who is a hell of a man and who has inspired me to try to be like him knowing that I can never be his equal but sure can try to get close - I don’t need or want anyone inspiring me.

Certainly not a politician.

I want a politician to pretty much get out of the way so I can do things myself.

Lower some taxes, secure the borders, keep the pressure on terrorists and those states that support them.

That’s what I want.

No need to inspire my ass.

Anyway, if you need inspiration there is already plenty to be found in America.

One example.  Aren’t the men and women joining our military both inspired and inspiring?  Forget the old canard that they are all poor and uneducated and without choices.  Yes, some do join for those reasons.  But do you seriously believe that all these men and women who are joining the military - knowing that there is a big ole ass shooting war going on - are doing so just for the education benefits?

Puhlease.  They know the risks.  They know the challenges.

But something pushes them to join anyway and I humbly submit it ain’t cause they can’t find something better to do or because Uncle Sam is going to pay for them to get an associates degree as a massage therapist.

No, they join because they are inspired to do so.  Maybe they don’t even realize it, but they see something bigger than themselves.  Something greater than what they know.  And they decide to take that jump, risk and all.  And in doing so they in turn inspire others.

Now, that is inspirational.

UPDATE:

WTH? Exactly what kind of inspiration is Obama trying to provide?
